Answer :
(a) Phenols can be first converted into benzene with the help of Zn dust in presence of heat which further can be easily converted to acetophenone by friedel craft acylation process. When benzene is treated with acetyl group (acetyl chloride) in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 then it produces acetophenone.
(b) For a secondary alcohol from ethanol we will proceed with the help of Grignard reagent. Here, we need one ch2 more unit so we will take Methylmagnesiumbriomide which on reaction with ethanol gives an adduct and form propan-2-ol on further hydrolysis.
