The 12th century saw the emergence of a new movement in Karnataka led by a Brahman called Basavanna. His followers were called Virashaiva, who worshipped the manifestation of Shiva called Linga. The men used to wear a small linga in a silver case stung across their left shoulders. The Virashaiva also, didn’t cremate their people as they believed that after death you unite with Shiva and don’t return to the world.
