It is a type of democracy based on the principle of elected officials representing a group of people, as divergent to direct democracy. It forms a Representative government or political representation. Representative government is the government made by elected representatives. That means, the government carried on by representatives chosen by and responsible to the voters.
Examples: All modern Western-style democracies like the United Kingdom (constitutional monarchy), France (unitary state), and the United States (federal republic). It is normally used in a lower chamber like the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, Lok Sabha of India.
