A. Mercury cell is used in hearing aids.
Mercury is used as a stabiliser which give batteries a longershelf life. Fortunately, the average content of mercury in hearing aid batteries is less than 1 per cent. This is significantly less than the early generations of mercury-oxide hearing aid batteries during the 1970s which had a mercury content of up to 50 percent!
Mercury is a naturally occurring liquid metal which, in large amounts, is hazardous to our planet and to people. If we all work together to choose very low or mercury-free batteries, the reduction in mercury use worldwide will be significant and a good choice for our environment.
B. The alkaline fuel cell(AFC), is also known as Bacon cell, after the British inventor Francis Thomas Bacon. Alkaline fuel cell consume hydrogen and pure oxygen producing potable water, heat, and electricity. They are among the most efficient fuel cells, having the potential to reach 70%.
C. Lead storage cell is used in automobile and inverters.
D. A dry cell does not have a long life. This dry cell is a zin-carbon battery. It has a very short shelf life because of zinc attacked by ammonium chloride and zinc container becomes thinner as the cell is used, zinc metal is oxidized to zinc ions.
