(i) The word mortal means someone or something which is capable of dying and won’t live forever; the word ‘coil’ refers to something that engulfs or envelopes around a particular person or thing. In the given extract ‘mortal coil’ refers to all the troubles, hardships, heartaches and sufferings that a human has to face during his lifetime. The phrase describes that during a lifetime man has himself occupied with a lot of sufferings which weigh heavy on his mind and heart making him miserable.
(ii) ‘Shuffling off this mortal coil’ with reference to the extract means moving away from all the troubles of life by dying. Death, according to the speaker is the only thing that puts an end to the ‘mortal coil’ that one is subjected to during his lifetime.
(iii) According to the soliloquy from which the above extract has been taken, the speaker says that during life when one sees dreams, such dreams are recognizable because they have colors, sound and familiar settings but we know not what happens after death but ‘the sleep of death’ is something which is alien to us and thus it’s something which scares us all.
