Answer :
In order to change the state of any substance, heat energy is supplied. The molecules of the substance use this heat to break the forces of attraction between its molecules so as to change their state. Since, the heat supplied during the change of state does not increase the kinetic energy of the substance. Therefore, the temperature remains constant during the change of state. This is known as latent heat.
