Natural calamities such as flood, cyclone, earthquake, etc., sometimes turn into a national disaster. Both Government and non-government agencies play a significant role in the relief and rehabilitation processes at the time of natural calamities.

The following are some of these agencies which help the victims of natural calamities:

1. UN Disaster Management Team (UNDMT) – INDIA:

UNDMT India assists Government in disaster risk management. The representatives of UNDMT from UN agencies such as WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, etc., join hands together to face a disaster.

2. Indian Armed Forces:

Indian Armed Forces form a part of Government agencies that help the victims of natural calamities. When the civil administration is unable to take on all the relief works, the Indian Armed Forces give a helping hand in specific tasks. They play a major role in establishing communication, search and rescue operations, transportation, food, and civil supplies, etc.,

3. National Cadet Corps (NCC):

NCC aims at developing the qualities of courage and selfless service among the youth. These young people help the victims a lot by rescuing them and assisting them in procuring the basic facilities of food, clothing, shelter, etc., at the time of natural calamities.

4. Civil Defence:

The Central Emergency Relief Training Institute (CERTI) is the training wing of the Emergency relief organisation. It belongs to the Government of India and people are trained to carry over the relief operations effectively and efficiently.

5. National Service Scheme:

National Service Scheme (NSS) is an organisation which emphasises the fact that the welfare of an individual depends on the welfare of the society as a whole. Students who got enrolled in NSS volunteer themselves into the affected areas with relief material especially in the slums. They work under the supervision of NSS Regional Director.

6. Nehru Yuva Kendras:

Nehru Yuva Kendras is a registered society that helps the victims of natural disaster. It functions under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The non-student rural youth belong to this Nehru Yuva Kendras, and they lend a helping hand in the relief and rescue operations.

7. Home Guard:

Home Guard is also a voluntary workforce that helps the people in any kind of natural calamities. They assist the police in maintaining internal security.

Thus, many agencies and non-profit organizations join in helping people at times of natural calamities.
