Swatantryaveer Savarkar went to England to acquire higher education and it was from there that he began to send revolutionary literature, pistols etc to the members of Abhinav Bharat in India. He stated that the Revolt of 1857 was the first Indian War of Independence in his book – ‘The 1857 War of Independence.’

India House in London was an important centre for providing help to revolutionary work in India by Indian revolutionaries abroad. It used to grant scholarships to Indian youths for higher studies in England. Swatantryaveer Savarkar was amongst those who received such a scholarship.
