The world population has been growing at an alarming rate which has led to a series of problems. The world needs effective population control measures as high increase in population will lead to a variety of economic, social and other problems. Population control measures can be classified under three heads –
a) Social measures – Population growth can be controlled through a variety of social measures. These include empowering women, spread of education, raising the minimum age of marriage and changing the social outlook regarding the effectiveness of big families.
b) Economic measures – Urbanisation, development of agriculture and industry leading to more economic opportunities, thereby raising the standards of living has proved to be effective population control measures economically.
c) Other measures – Effective family planning measures including propaganda, free availability of contraceptives and tax incentives to small families are some of the other measures that act as effective population control methods.

Climate is the most important physical factor that influences the distribution of population in the world. Influence of climate on the spatial distribution pattern is manifested through temperature variations, amount of rainfall and its seasonality. In general, areas having warm humid climate are densely populated. Means of survival and development of different economic activities are either directly or indirectly influenced by climate. Areas with unfavourable climate are thus sparsely populated as it hinders the prolific development of population.
