Explain the term
‘Universal adult franchise’ is the principle included in the constitution of Independent India giving all the adults the Right to vote. It means that they cast one vote in the election to choose their representatives.
During the colonial rule, People from various community or group joined the freedom struggle. People were not allowed to speak against or criticise the British government. When the national struggle was started, people started demanding their rights and also criticised the government. British government fulfilled some of the demands of the Indians to shut them down but all the adults were not allowed to vote. When India became independent on 15 August 1947, the nationalists were aware that the government cannot do whatever they want to and they have to make decisions according to people’s needs and demands. So the principle of the universal adult franchise was implemented giving all the adults the right to vote as the citizens of the country.
