With reference to drug/alcohol abuse:

a) Addiction: After continuous substance abuse, there is a marked change in behaviour due to the biochemical changes in the brain and the other systems in the body. Over-usage of these substances is detrimental to the body. The usage gives a feeling of well being which is temporary but forces a person to use the drugs or alcohol even when not needed. This is known as addiction.

b) Dependence: Dependence on a drug happens because of the inherent addictive nature of the substance. Dependence is the psychological attachment that patients develop to the drug in such a way that they are unable to function or live without them.

c) Withdrawal symptoms: Withdrawal symptoms occur when the drug/alcohol intake by an addicted person is discontinued abruptly. It is characterized by anxiety, nausea, sweating, panic, etc.
