Explain the conditions in which democracies are able to accommodate social diversities.
The conditions in which democracies are able to accommodate social diversities:
1. How people perceive their identities- People’s identity should be multiple that is, they should see themselves as belonging to their respective community or state or group and at the same time, as the citizens of the country. Their singular identity should be complementary to their national identity. For example, most Belgians see themselves as Belgians as well as Dutch or German-speaking.
2. How politicians take up the demands of a community- The demands should not harm the constitutional principles or any other community. For example, the Sinhalese community tried to assert themselves at the cost of the Tamil community’s identity.
3. How government reacts to different groups’ demands- Government should accommodate minority community in the power structure and give them a voice. If rulers try to suppress a community, it will only result in dispute and disintegration. For example, in Sri Lanka, the civil war was the result of the Sinhalese community trying to marginalize Tamil community.
In a democracy, there is equality for all. Acceptance of social diversities does not lead to lack of unity. On the other hand, incorporating various communities in its power structure makes the democracy stronger. A community’s identity should not be questioned or suppressed. Their individual identity should be integrated into the national identity. For this, people should see their identity as multiple, politicians should not show favouritism and government should give reasonable accommodation to all communities.
