Explain liberalism in politics and economic field prevailing in Europe in the 19th century.

The word liberalism is derived from the Latin word ‘liber’ meaning ‘free.’ Liberalism was the major form of the reform movement which started in Europe during the nineteenth century.
The revolution which was led by the educated middle class of Europe was called the Revolution of Liberals, 1848.
1. In 1848, a republic based on the universal franchise of men was formed in France.
2. Monarchy was overthrown.
3. The common motto of the Liberals was to abolish the discrimination based on one’s birth.
4. Politically, they wanted a Government to be formed by consent putting an end to dictatorship and autocracy. It stood for a constitution, a parliament and ownership of private property.
5. From the economic perspective, they wanted to abolish the trade restrictions that were imposed by the State.
Thus, the ideologies of liberalism brought about significant changes in Europe.
