Curiosity, need for adventure and excitement, and experimentation, to escape facing problems, stress, pressures to excel in academics or examinations, unstable or unsupportive family structures and peer pressure constitute causes which motivate youngsters towards drug and alcohol use.
Measures for prevention and control of alcohol and drug abuse among adolescents are as follows:
- We should avoid undue peer pressure – Every child is different from other child, similarly their personalities and choices. Hence a child should not be forced to do something which is against his/her choice or beyond his/her capabilities in terms of studies, sports or other activities.
- The youngster should seek advice and help immediately in case of need. The advice and help can be from peers, close friends or trusted friends. In this way the youngster can get proper advice to sort out their problems; this would help young to vent their feelings of anxiety and guilt.
- Parents, teachers and peers should always look for danger signs. If using alcohol and drugs, should inform about it to the concerned person. Appropriate measures should be taken to diagnose the malady and the underlying causes. This would help in initiating proper remedial steps or treatment.
- If required should seek for professional and medical help. There are many highly qualified psychologists, psychiatrists, and deaddiction and rehabilitation programmes to help individuals who have unfortunately got in the quagmire of drug/alcohol abuse. With help and sufficient efforts and will power, youngster can get rid of the problem completely and lead a perfectly normal and healthy life.
