Explain any 5 major causes for the widespread poverty in India.
Poverty is a situation when people cannot buy their food, clothes, and house. They are unable to fulfil their necessities. Major causes of poverty in India are:
• Unequal distribution of land or Non-implementation of land reforms:
Due to the unequal distribution of land, there were many small farmers who had a very small plot of land which was not enough to generate enough money.
• Lack of inclusive economic growth:
In the early years of independence, India’s economic growth was very slow. It was insufficient to generate an adequate amount of employment opportunities which leads to poverty in India.
• Population growth:
The population of India is increasing at a faster rate whereas land of whole India is fixed. Due to this, land per person is decreasing, and decreased land is not enough to produce enough income for them. It is also difficult to generate employment opportunities for many people.
• Inflation and food prices:
Inflation and rise in food prices increase the expenditure of consumption per person whereas income is not increasing at that faster rate. It pushes many people below the poverty line.
• Underutilized human resource:
In India, disguised unemployment is a very common phenomenon. It is a situation where more than required people are engaged in some work. It is prevalent in the agriculture sector.
