The taluqdars were big landholders of Awadh. When the British annexed the territory of Awadh, they undermined the position of taluqdars. The introduction of Summary Settlement in 1856, removed the taluqdars from Awadh. The dispossession of taluqdars broke the entire social order. The ties of loyalty and patronage that had bound the peasant to the taluqdar were disrupted. So they turned against the British and joined the revolt of 1857. They were fully supported by peasants and sepoys who were also enraged due to the land revenue settlement of British. The taluqdars also joined Begum Hazrat Mahal of Awadh and fought against the British. Thus, taluqdars played an important role in the revolt of 1857.
