Find the maximum and minimum values, if any, of the following functions given by

h(x) = x + 1, x (1, 1)

Answer :

It is given that h(x) = x + 1, x (1, 1)

Now, if a point x0 is closest to -1, then,

We find for all x0 (1, 1)

Also, if a point x1 is closest to 1, then,

We find for all x1 (1, 1)

Therefore, the function h (x) has neither maximum nor minimum value in (-1, 1).
