# Solve the following equations by the method of elimination (by substitution)

5x – 2y = 19

3x + y = 18

Answer :

We have

5x – 2y = 19 …(i)

3x + y = 18 …(ii)

From equation (i),

5x – 2y = 19

⇒ 5x = 2y + 19

…(iii)

Substituting the value of x from equation (iii) in equation (ii), we get

⇒ 6y + 57 + 5y = 90

⇒ (6y + 5y) + 57 = 90

⇒ 11y + 57 = 90

⇒ 11y = 90 – 57

⇒ 11y = 33

⇒ y = 3

Putting this value of y in equation (iii), we get

⇒ x = 5

**Thus, we get the solution as x = 5 and y = 3.**
