A farmer counts nine heads and 24 legs of Chickens and cows. How many has each of these Chickens and cows?
Answer :
Heads counted = 9
Legs counted = 24
Number of legs of a chicken = 2
Number of legs of a cow = 4
Let a number of chickens be x and number of cows be y.
Legs of chicken = 2x
Legs of cow = 4y
Total legs = 2x + 4y
2x + 4y = 24 divided by 2
x + 2y = 12 ……(1)
Both the chicken and cows have 1 head
Total heads = x + y
x + y = 9 ……(2)
Eliminate (1) and (2), Subtracting eq(2) from eq(1)
x + 2 y – ( x + y) = 12 – 9
y = 3
Putting value of y in equation 2,
x + y = 9
x + 3 = 9
x = 6
Therefore, there are 6 chickens and 3 cows.
