Q. 45.0( 1 Vote )

Determine whether (2x + 1) is a factor of 4x3 + 4x2 – x – 1.

Answer :

Let f(x) = 4x3 + 4x2 – x – 1

By factor Theorem,

2x + 1 = 0 ; x = – 1/2

f(– 1/2) = 4(– 1/2)3 + 4(– 1/2)2 – (– 1/2) – 1

= 4(– 1/8) + 4(1/4) + (1/2) – 1

= (– 1/2) + 1 + (1/2) – 1 = 0

f(– 1/2) = 0

So, (2x + 1) is a factor of f(x).
