# Determine whether

Let f(x) = x3 – 14x2 + 3x + 12

By factor theorem,

x + 1 = 0 ;x = – 1

If f(– 1) = 0 then (x + 1) is a factor of f(x)

f(– 1) = (– 1)3 – 14(– 1)2 + 3(– 1) + 12

= – 1 – 14 – 3 + 12 = – 6(not equal to 0)

(x + 1) is not a factor of f(x) = x3 – 14x2 + 3x + 12
