Q. 6

# Divide p(x) = x^{3} — 4x^{2} + 5x — 2 by x — 2 Find r(x).

Answer :

Here the dividend polynomial p(x) = x^{3} — 4x^{2} + 5x — 2

and the divisor polynomial s(x) = x – 2

Coefficients of x^{3}, x^{2}, x and x^{0} in the dividend polynomial are 1, –4, 5 and –2 respectively.

Equating divisor polynomial x – 2 to 0, we get x = 2.

The reminder obtained when the cubic polynomial x^{3} — 4x^{2} + 5x — 2 is divided by x–2 is r(x) = 0.
