# A table cover 4 m × 2 m is spread on a table. If 25 cm of the table cover is hanging all around the table, find the area of the table top and the cost of polishing the table top at Rs. 25 per square meter.

Answer :

**Given: Table cover of dimensions 4 m × 2 m**

⇒ Length of the cover (l) = 4 m and

Breadth of the cover (b) = 2 m

We have, **1 m = 100 cm**

⇒ l = 400 cm and b = 200 cm

But, 25 cm of the cover is hanging from the table on all the four sides.

⇒ Length of the table = (l – 25 – 25) cm

⇒ Length of the table = (400 – 25 – 25) cm

∴ Length of the table = 350 cm = 3.5 m

Similarly, Breadth of the table = (200 – 25 – 25) cm

∴ Breadth of the table = 150 cm = 1.5 m

We know, **area of a rectangle = length × breadth**

⇒ Area of table top = 3.5 × 1.5

∴ Area of table top = 5.25 m^{2}

It is given that the cost for polishing 1 m^{2} carpet is Rs. 25.

⇒ Cost of polishing the table = Rs. 25 × 5.25

∴ Cost of polishing = Rs. 131.25

**Thus, the area of the table top is 5.25 m ^{2}, and the cost of polishing it is Rs. 131.25.**
