Using the splitting middle term – the middle term of the general equation is divided in two such values that:


Product = a.c


For the given equation a = 1 b = 3 c = – 10


= 1. – 10 = – 10


And either of their sum or difference = b


= 3


Thus the two terms are 5 and – 2


Difference = 5 – 2 = 3


Product = 5. – 2 = – 10


x2 + 5x – 2x – 10 = 0


x(x + 5) – 2(x + 5) = 0


(x + 5)(x – 2) = 0


(x + 5) = 0 or (x – 2) = 0

x = 2 (rejecting the negative value)

Denominator = x + 3 = 2 + 3 = 5
