Soaring Cut-offs Frustrates Students
Year after year, aspiring university students witness increasingly soaring cut-offs for their dream colleges. This trend has a major impact on many deserving students who might not have scored a 99%, left without a seat in the colleges.
Many deserving candidates despite scoring very well in their exams lose out in this race as there are very limited seats available in colleges and the number of applicants is far more. Even more problematic is the blatant elitism propagated by these colleges, where impossibly high marks equals to a smart student, disregarding their privilege as well as other aspects of intelligence not measures by marks such as creativity and knowledge. This has an adverse affect on students and at times even forces a few of them to resort to alternative, often harmful paths.
The Government should initiate steps to provide enough avenues for youngsters, such as starting evening shifts in colleges to make more seats available for admission to different courses, especially Vocational courses.
