Answer :

The United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) was developed in 1956 by the United Nation to ensure sustainable development by eradicating poverty and removing inequalities.

The United Nations Development Programme has outlined certain priorities as part of its urban strategy:

Increasing shelter for poor in urban areas. With the increase of urbanization, many poor people find it difficult to have access to safe affordable shelter.

Providing basic urban services like Clean Water and sanitation. This helps in ensuring good health of the poor in urban people.

Providing access to basic education and primary health care. When people have basic education and access to healthcare it helps to reach overall human development.

Improving women’s access to basic services and government facilities. When women are given the chance to have access to better healthcare, education, scholarships, job opportunities, etc. it helps in economic development and improves the standard of living of people.

Upgrading energy use and alternative transport systems for reducing air pollution. For example use of CNG instead of petroleum helps in reducing the air pollution as it is a cleaner fuel than petroleum.

Urbanization is a recent phenomenon which means an increase in the population of people in urban areas. This increase is usually caused by people moving from rural areas to the urban areas in the hope of better job opportunities, education, healthcare, etc.

There are five environmental problems of urban settlements in the

developing countries of the world:

The increase in population size in urban areas means more availability of food. This causes strain on the environment as farmers use more high yielding crops which requires more fertilizers and irrigation hence, damaging the soil.

Urban areas have many industries which often dumps there waste in rivers or other water bodies or in landfills which causes land pollution.

Improper sewage system makes urban areas unsanitary. And often times poor people are forced to live in these unsanitary areas causing chronic health problems.

Many industries, as well as people, use fuels like coal and petroleum which results in air pollution.

To accommodate the huge population in urban areas, concrete structures are erected which makes these areas heat islands.
