Q. 14

Define the follow

Answer :

(a) Brownian movement is the phenomenon shown by the colloids. It is the zig-zag movement shown by sol particles as they experience the bombardment (collision) by the molecules of dispersion medium. This continuous movement doesn’t let the sol particles to get settled and hence provides the stability to sol.

(b) As the name suggests when a multiple no of small molecules with diameter less than 1 nm aggregate together to form a particle in a colloidal range and behave as a colloid is known as multimolecular colloid.

(c) When the catalyst is in the same phase as of reactant it is known as a homogeneous catalyst and the catalytic reaction in presence of homogeneous catalysts are known as homogeneous catalysis. For ex,

2SO2(g) + O2(g) 2SO3(g)

In this reaction all reactants and catalyst are in same gaseous phase. So it is a homogeneous catalysis.
