Define a taxon? Give

Answer :

  • Taxonomy refers to the science of naming, classifying and giving an identity to biological organisms.

  • It is done on the basis of common characters that the organims share.

  • A taxon is the unit of classification. (Taxon: singular; Taxa: plural)

  • A taxon is, in simple terms, a rank. Species, family, order, class, all these are taxons.


For example, for humans, the various taxons are,

Genus: Homo
Species‎: ‎sapiens
Phylum‎: ‎Chordata
Domain‎: ‎Eukaryota
