Governor General Lord Dalhousie carried out the annexation of Awadh in 1856. He adopted the policy of Subsidiary Alliance on Awadh in 1801. According to the terms of this alliance, the Nawab of Awadh had to disband his army. Instead the British would take care of any external or internal threats to their power. A British armed contingent would be stationed within the kingdom. Also, the Nawab could no longer enter into any agreements without the permission of the British. Thus, he became completely dependent upon the British and lost his power to control taluqdars and other rebellious chiefs.
This policy created disaffection and disturbance among people in all the areas. This caused great upheaval and resulted in the revolt of 1857.
