The secondary sector of economic activities is concerned with the processing of raw materials into products and goods. Industry belongs to this secondary sector and is involved with the production of goods, extraction of minerals and/or the provision of services. There are various manners of classifying industries as they vary on the basis of raw materials, size and ownership. Following we can find the division of industries on the basis of raw materials used.
• Agro based industries – the industries which utilize plant and animal products like fibre crops, leather etc fall under this category. Examples of this type include food processing, vegetable oil, cotton textile, dairy products and leather industries.
• Mineral based industries – industries that utilize mineral ores as their raw material come under this category. These are primary industries as their products are used by other industries. For example, iron is a product made by the iron-ore industry which is then utilized to manufacture heavy machinery, building materials and railway coaches.
• Marine based industries – these industries utilize the products from seas and oceans. Examples include those processing sea food or manufactures fish oil.
• Forest based industries – these industries utilize forest produce as raw materials. Examples include pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, furniture and buildings.
