Aldol condensation reaction: When two same aldehydes or two same ketones having α-hydrogen are reacted together in the presence of a base, they form β-hydroxyaldehyde (an aldol) or β-hydroxyketone (a ketol). This reaction is called aldol condensation.

α-hydrogen: Hydrogen which is attached to α-carbon.

α-carbon: Carbon which is attached to an adjacent carbonyl group.

(CH3)3C—CHO does not undergo aldol condensation.


This is because for aldol condensation to take place, at least one α-hydrogen (i.e., hydrogen at carbon adjacent to carbonyl carbon) should be available, which is not present in (CH3)3 – C—CHO as shown below:
