The most splendid of temples at Vijayanagar is the Vitthala temple, near the Tungabhadra River. It is considered to be the most ornate of the Vijayanagar temples.
Vitthala - Vishnu is enshrined in this temple. The mahamandapam of this temple, in front of the sanctum - enclosed in the inner courtyard is of great beauty. Its base is chiseled with friezes of the swan, the horse and the warrior. At intervals, there are projections with bas reliefs portraying the deification of the ten avataras of Vishnu.

Therefore, Vitthala temple comprises buildings and architectural remains. It has many sculptures showing importance of God and many creativity of ancient people on stone. Combined with other sources of information like literature, Inscriptions and popular traditions buildings are an important source material for reconstruction of the past. But we need to keep in mind that architectural features do not reflect the views of ordinary men.
The first dynasty, known as the Sangama dynasty, exercised control till 1485. They were supplanted by the Saluvas, military commanders, who remained in power till 1503 when they were replaced by the Tuluvas. Krishnadeva Raya belonged to the Tuluva dynasty. Krishnadeva Raya’s rule was characterised by expansion and consolidation.
I. This was the time when the land between the Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers was acquired (1512).
II. The rulers of Orissa were subdued and severe defeats were inflicted on the Sultan of Bijapur.
III. Although the kingdom remained in a constant state of military preparedness, it flourished under conditions of unparalleled peace and prosperity.
IV. Krishnadeva Raya is credited with building some fine temples and adding impressive gopurams to many important south Indian temples.
V. Agriculture flourished and to increase production the Raya’s undertook wise irrigation policy like the construction of Kamalapuram tank.
VI. Krishnadeva Raya’s reign is marked by peace, prosperity and military preparedness.
VII. Foreign travelers speak of his efficient administration and prosperity of the empire
