Two events during 1970-72 that made Indira Gandhi a strong nationalist leader are as follows –
1) She had put forward a programme prior to the 1971 elections that aimed towards the eradication of poverty. to achieve this, she created a ceiling on rural land holdings and urban property which proved her nationalist demeanour to the poor and the underprivileged in the country.
2) the crisis in East Pakistan which led to the 1971 Indo-Pak war and the establishment of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation saw her statesmanship which was admired even by the opposition parties.
