Indentured labourer refers to the bonded labourer who works for an employer for a fixed period.
The nineteenth century witnessed an increased number of Indians and Chinese migrating to work in plantations, mines, and other construction projects across the world. They found it difficult to cope with the harsh living conditions.
After the nineteenth century, these indentured labourers discovered their ways of survival.
1. They started expressing themselves in a new way by blending art and culture.
2. The annual Muharram procession of Trinidad witnessed the collective participation of workers belonging to different races and religions. It was turned into a riotous carnival. It was called as ‘Hosay.’
3. A religion called Rastafarianism emerged in Jamaica. It reflected the cultural links of the migrants to the Caribbean.
4. The popular chutney music of Trinidad and Guyana was also another expression of the post indenture labourers.
Thus, the indentured labourers learned to survive themselves.
