After implantation, interdigitation of maternal and fetal tissues takes place, a structural and functional organ forms. This organ connects the maternal body to the embryo.

Functions of placenta:

1. Placenta provides nutrients to the embryo.

2. Placenta also helps in excretion of carbon dioxide and waste material from the embryo.

3. Placenta provides immunity to the growing embryo by passing IgG antibodies from the mother to the embryo.
