To escape earth’s gravitational field, we need to accelerate in a direction opposite to the force of gravity, which ultimately consumes a large amount of fuel. However, while returning, the force of gravity acts in the direction of motion, which helps in aiding the motion rather than restricting it. Hence, less fuel is consumed.
