Q. 13

A person sitting in a chair in a satellite feels weightless because
A. The earth does not attract the objects in a satellite.

B. The normal force by the chair on the person balances the earth’s attraction

C. The normal force is zero.

D. The person in satellite is not accelerated.

Answer :

The feeling of weightlessness comes due to free fall. In the satellite frame of reference, the orbital velocity of the satellite is such that as the object starts falling towards the earth, the earth rotates. Hence, the chair along with the person experiences weightlessness, and there is no normal reaction to register weight.
