(a) The two points that in my opinion could have caused this landfill crash are:
a. It could have been due to building up of gases in the pile which loosened the solid waste and which triggered the crash.
b. Landfill could have crashed due to increase in the weight of landfill which could have happened due to rainwater accumulation.
c. The sinking of roads due to the increasing weight of the garbage pile.
d. Leachate (liquid) gets formed up when waste breaks down in the landfill and water filters through that waste. This is highly toxic and can pollute the land, ground water and water ways.
e. The crash could have been due to poor management.
(b) The preventive measures to be adhered to as a policy which could have avoided this accident are:
a. The trapped gases in a pile should be compulsorily released on a regular basis.
b. All pits should be narrower at the bottom than the top to prevent them from collapsing, as there is more weight on the top than on the bottom.
c. When the pit is full, it should be capped with a layer of soil at least 90 cm deep. Decorating Plants can be planted on this.
d. The best way to prevent leachate is to keep the landfill covered with a roof, or a canvas or plastic cover until it is capped.
e. A simple vent in the form of the chimney should be created in order to release built up gases. The height of the vent is raised as the height of the landfill increases. The number of vents needed depends on the size of the pit and the type of trash in the landfill.
(c) Suggestions to citizens so as to help in preventing such a disaster in future:
a. It should be built away from population.
b. Never live near a landfill.
