A compound X reacts with concentrated sulphuric acid at 443K to form an unsaturated compound Y. The reaction is –

Further X reacts with sodium metal to evolve a colourless gas Z

Here Z is hydrogen gas(H2)

Y is an unsaturated compound formed by reaction of X and conc. H2SO4. Hence, H2SO4 is acting as a dehydrating agent here .

X is Ethyl alcohol (C2H5-OH) and Y is an unsaturated hydrocarbon. Y is ethene(C2H4).

X-C2H5-OH/Ethanol/Ethyl alcohol

Y-C2H/ Ethene

Z-H2/ Hydrogen


Role of Sulphuric acid:
It is used as a dehydrating agent.
