Explants are any part which is cut off and grown separately in a test tube in special nutrient media in sterile conditions in a special laboratory. From these explants, a complete new plant can be regenerated. This is also called totipotency. Thousands of plants can be generated or grown by this method. The main stress is given on the preparation of the nutrient media which should contain a carbon source like sucrose which is essential for the regeneration of new healthy plant. Other important nutrients provided via nutrient media are inorganic salts, amino acids, various vitamins as well as growth regulators like cytokinins and auxin which promote better development. This method saves time and energy both, a large number of plants are regenerated in a short interval of time. This method or technique of producing a huge number of plants is called Micropropagation.

The possibility of obtaining a new healthy plant by Micropropagation is almost negligible. The new plants that are grown by tissue culture are genetically identical to the mother plant from which they are being grown. Hence, taking a TMV infected tissue for tissue culture and generation of a new plant will give infected new plants through Micropropagation.
